Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard's origins date back to 1782 when Francis Camper established a shipyard in Gosport, England, for the construction of fishing vessels and colliers. The yard later passed to his son, William Camper. In 1842, William's nephew, Richard Nicholsons, joined the firm, leading to the establishment of Camper & Nicholsons. The company became known for building yachts, initially focusing on racing cutters and schooners. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Camper & Nicholsons had gained a reputation for both sailing and motor yachts, constructing vessels for notable clients. Charles E. Nicholson, succeeding his father Benjamin Nicholson, was a prominent designer for the firm, contributing to its reputation for performance and luxury. The shipyard built a range of yachts, including large J-Class racing yachts like 'Velsheda,' 'Shamrock V,' and 'Endeavour.' During wartime periods, Camper & Nicholsons also engaged in naval construction and refit work. Post-World War II, the company continued to build yachts, though the focus gradually shifted. The shipyard operations in Gosport eventually ceased, and the brand transitioned into yacht brokerage, management, and other services, operating separately from its original shipbuilding activities. While the shipbuilding entity no longer exists in its historical form, the Camper & Nicholsons brand remains active in the yachting industry through its brokerage and management services.
